Protecting Privacy
CBHS Health Fund Limited (CBHS) is subject to the Privacy Act 1988 of the Commonwealth of Australia. We are an organisation as defined by that Act and hold personal information, including health information.

Why we have this policy
CBHS takes its obligations to protect your privacy very seriously. This policy statement has been prepared to help us to comply with our privacy obligations and to inform you about your privacy rights. We have also prepared an associated Privacy Directive for our employees.

Privacy Compliance
Our policy is to comply in all respects with our privacy obligations. This policy binds CBHS as an organisation as well as our staff, officers and Board. We also expect our contractors to comply fully with their privacy obligations.

About information we hold
We may hold and use a variety of records. These include name and address of members and each other person on their cover, the level of cover, benefits paid and premium payments we have received. When claims are made, the treating hospital or provider may need to supply us information about the health services provided.
Your personal information will be used only to provide you with health insurance services, (including for benefit payment, entitlements and audit purposes), administer your membership and communicate with you. You need to be aware that if you do not provide us with information about yourself or others in some circumstances, we may be unable to provide health insurance services.

Our disclosure and information practices
To enable us to do these things, we may disclose your information to people who provide services to CBHS.

We contract out some services such as mail out services involved in communicating with you as a member. Also, where you receive treatment from a hospital or provider, contracted to CBHS, we may provide them with your cover details to enable them to fulfill their responsibilities to you under the contract. The personal information we hold is stored securely. We do not routinely disclose your information to any outside person or organisation except for the purposes we have stated.

How you can gain access to information
You can ask us for access to personal information we hold about you and ask that it be corrected. This can be done by writing to the CBHS Privacy Officer. Most of the information we hold is information you have provided to us which relates to claims by hospitals and providers for services provided to you and other people on your cover. There is no charge for lodging a request to access your information. We may make a small charge, however, for our time involved in providing this access and for associated costs such as photocopying.
