Detoxing the Right Way

06 October, 2014

A busy life without taking care of your health can take its toll on your body over time. This is especially true for the organ that processes most of the toxins from your body – the liver. So in order to function at your optimal health, take these steps to give your body a much-needed detox.

Try starting your day with a cup of warm water and lemon first thing in the morning to help with digestion. You should also make sure to drink plenty of water (about two litres) over the course of the day. Some foods that are great for your liver and detox health include garlic and onions, ginger (which also helps with respiratory problems and speeds up metabolism), beetroot, cruciferous vegetables, wholegrains for fibre, berries and green tea for antioxidants, spices cinnamon and turmeric, as well as the enzymes in yoghurt and the soluble fibre found in apples.

Just as important as eating the right food is in knowing what to avoid. You should generally steer clear of all processed foods; these lack the vitamins and minerals that are essential to good liver health. In the long-term, consuming foods high in cholesterol, sugar, salt, animal products and too much alcohol can lead to various problems with your liver, including cancer, cirrhosis and fatty liver, so stay away from these as much as possible too.

To increase circulation, try using a dry brush on your body for a few minutes before getting in the shower. You should begin at your ankles and work upwards towards major lymph nodes. Afterwards in the shower, periodically change the temperature between hot and cold - this will further jumpstart your circulation and increase blood flow to your extremities.

Deep breathing is also a great technique, and it activates your Parasympathetic Nervous System, which in turn helps to remove toxins from the body. Try breathing in deeply and holding for two seconds before exhaling. Even just being more aware of your breathing throughout the day can be helpful.

Taking a long soak in a ‘detox bath’ is another way to clear your mind and body. Try adding chopped ginger, apple cider vinegar or baking soda to your bath. The ginger in particular is good for sweating, which is an effective way of drawing out unwanted toxins. Be aware that this can be dehydrating, so make sure that you drink plenty of water before and after your bath.

What Our Members Think

I have been with CBHS since I began at CBA 15 years ago...Now I have three beautiful children, one who has a disability. Our top extras cover has been really essential for his early intervention. I do love the ease of claiming online.

What Our Members Think

I am relatively new to CBHS and am loving it already. I worked for a CBA subsidiary a long time ago but was still eligible to join. So much better that the for-profit funds - our premium is only a little more and we pay a lower co-contribution and get great benefits. I am loving the massage rebate for my partner and gym rebate for me!

What Our Members Think

Love CBHS as I never have to doubt that they've got my back when I need it. Been through other insurers who have limited options or limits, yet cost the same or more.
