Reduce the stress of gift giving this Christmas

24 November, 2014

There’s no denying it, Christmas seems to come around quicker every year. Yes, it’s always in December, but somehow December seems to arrive early each time. Christmas is meant to be a time when family gets together, enjoys special feasts, and gifts are exchanged. However, the joy of Christmas giving can often get overpowered by the stress of trying to find the time and the money to buy these gifts.

So how can the stress of spending money and spending it fast for Christmas be managed?

One relatively easy way to manage that stress is to buy Christmas presents earlier and throughout the year, rather than in the days leading up to Christmas.

Christmas is the retailer’s biggest time of year

You can’t blame small business or big businesses for not having sales on around Christmas, as this is their most prosperous time of year. So don’t expect to find a bargain around this time. However, the same product may be offered for sometimes as little as half the price if the product is purchased before Christmas.

What are the benefits of shopping well before Christmas?

You can spread out your spending over time

One of the more difficult aspects of Christmas is that it’s often necessary not to buy just one gift, but a number of gifts. Family members, relatives, friends having you over for Christmas, work colleagues, doctors, school teachers, carers … we could continue forever. The outcome of this is that you are spending a lot of money in one short period of time.

However, if you plan ahead - even as early as April or May - and set out a list of people you are likely to buy Christmas presents for, then you may be in a position to buy these gifts slowly over a greater period of time.

It is far easier to spend a little amount every payday, than a large amount in a single month.

Shop from the comfort of your home

With the benefits of being able to shop online, planning and buying early can also allow you to shop on the Internet for the best price of the gift you are after, particularly if you want something specific. Planning and buying early allows you the time to compare prices, and also allows you the opportunity to buy from an overseas seller. Usually these sellers have a competitive price.

Also, by buying the product well before Christmas, you won’t have to stress about the shipping or delivery time.

Mental and physical benefits

Not only will planning and buying your gifts before the week of Christmas save you financially, but it will also save you in terms of stress. Stress is clinically proven to not only mentally impact people, but it can also have physical consequences as well, such as higher blood pressure or fatigue. The last thing you need at Christmas is to feel so exhausted and stressed from shopping for gifts that you can’t enjoy the pleasure of giving or receiving gifts.

So why not take the time this November to begin your Christmas shopping, and reap the rewards on Christmas morning when you’re relaxed, alert, and excited to see what goodies are under the tree for you.

What Our Members Think

I have been with CBHS since I began at CBA 15 years ago...Now I have three beautiful children, one who has a disability. Our top extras cover has been really essential for his early intervention. I do love the ease of claiming online.

What Our Members Think

I am relatively new to CBHS and am loving it already. I worked for a CBA subsidiary a long time ago but was still eligible to join. So much better that the for-profit funds - our premium is only a little more and we pay a lower co-contribution and get great benefits. I am loving the massage rebate for my partner and gym rebate for me!

What Our Members Think

Love CBHS as I never have to doubt that they've got my back when I need it. Been through other insurers who have limited options or limits, yet cost the same or more.
