Changing the face of men’s health one mo’ at a time

For men all over the world, the month of November has taken on a whole new meaning. “Movember”, is a movement that aims to increase awareness of and conversation about men’s health issues, as well as raise funds for some of the biggest issues affecting men’s health today - prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and physical inactivity.

Since 2003 men have been growing their moustaches for the 30 days of Movember, and women are now in on the action too (in a slightly different way, needless to say!). Not only can women help by starting a conversation about men’s health, they can fundraise for the men in their life or take the Move Challenge by moving more for the 30 days of the month. Plus, the Movember Foundation has introduced their Movember Industry Challenges, enticing companies and groups within certain business sectors to compete in the name of men’s health.

Want to be a Mo Bro?

Men who participate in Movember, sometimes referred to as “Mo Bros”, take action to change the face of men’s health by starting clean-shaven on November 1st and growing just a moustache for the next 30 days (sorry guys, beards, goatees and soul patches don’t count). Not only is it a great opportunity to grow a fine piece of moustachery (the more extravagant, the better!) - it’s a chance to start conversations, raise funds, and bring some awareness to the biggest concerns in men’s health. 

Start by making it official and signing up to Movember 2015. Commit to growing a moustache and use this to raise funds for the Movember Foundation. There are plenty of tools available to help you in asking friends, family and co-workers for support.

With your moustache journey begun, get grooming. How you wear your moustache is up to you...thin and wispy, thick and full, perfectly manicured - name your style.

Some of CBHS’s favourites include:moustaches4

  • The Chevron – a thick and luscious moustache, popular in the 70s and 80s, and forever immortalised by Magnum P.I.

  • The Dali - a narrow and neat moustache with long points bent or curved steeply upwards, named after Salvador Dali

  • The Handlebar - a fabulous bushy and long moustache that curls up at the ends, the Handlebar is one of the bolder additions to the men’s facial hair suite 

  • The Fu Manchu - a full, straight and stereotypically Asian moustache that tapers into two tendrils from the corners of the mouth.

  • The Painter’s Brush - a thick, short and rounded moustache covering the width of the mouth, a neater choice for those seeking the 1970’s newsreader look (think Ron Burgundy). 

  • The Pencil - a thin moustache worn a little above the lip and made famous by Clark Gable, although some might argue that it was best worn by Gomez from The Addams Family

  • The Monopoly Man – the appropriately named Monopoly Man, although highly sought after, is incredibly rare due to its highly plump shape, as well as the large volume of hair required in order to sculpt it from.

The size and style of your mo isn’t important - the goal is simply to get involved, start talking and raising money, and see where the journey takes you. There’s strength in numbers so why not get your friends, co-workers and family involved too? Whatever you do, spread the word and keep up the conversation.

If someone comments on your fan’tache’tic mo, put their interest to good use by sharing your knowledge of men’s health, or maybe even encourage them to donate. Make your grooming efforts worthwhile!

Ideas to make your moustache even more fun

As well as aiming for a moustache that would make even Hulk Hogan jealous, you can highlight what you’re doing by:

Throw a party - Roundup every man you know and invite him to a party on Movember 1st. Your invite should stipulate that attendees must be clean shaven to ensure everyone is playing by the rules. Throw another party in 30 days to show off your facial art. Make sure you have the camera ready!

Start a little healthy competition! - If there’s a large group of you taking part, arrange a series of prizes that can be given as awards for efforts such as “best moustache”, “most creative”, and “most money raised”.CBHS_1d

Host a fancy dress ‘tash bash - In the 70’s and 80’s, moustaches were all the rage. And men weren’t raising money, they simply wanted to look on trend. Head back to that era and slip on some bell bottoms, or tight leather pants, or make like Miami Vice with a super cool sports coat or Hawaiian print shirt.  

Movember mobile app - Keeping your friends up-to-date on the progress of your moustache is easy with the Movember mobile app. Simply snap a picture every day during the month and share it on Facebook and Twitter.

Become a Mo' MOVEr

MOVE is another initiative by the crew who ‘brought back the moustache’. It asks that you commit to getting active this Movember, by encouraging you to do anything that gets you moving a little more than usual. Be it a walk to work, a stroll after dinner, a yoga class, bike ride or 10km run - taking part in MOVE not only improves your general wellbeing, but raises some much needed awareness on a variety of men’s health issues.

To start your Movember MOVE journey, sign up and commit to moving more for 30 days. Try to encourage others to join you on your journey too, and don’t forget to ask for donations.

Ways to get moving more include:

  • Taking the stairs instead of the lift;
  • Walking during your lunch break;
  • Signing up to a dance class;
  • Joining a gym or committing to a new gym class;
  • Exercise during commercial breaks;
  • Do squats while you brush your teeth;
  • Take a nature walk;
  • Take a weekend hike;
  • Ride your bike to work;
  • Play footy or another sport with the kids;
  • Meet friends for walks instead of coffee.

Big or small, any movement is great. Lots of little movements eventually build to something big!

Ways to make moving more fun

Unite your fellow MOVErs - Invite your friends and family to a group activity, such as an orienteering event, dodgeball game or footy match. If there are lots of you taking part, take it in turns to create moments when you can all get moving together.

Arrange an office yoga class - Turn a conference room into a yoga hall and offer weekly classes for the month of Movember. You could also arrange dance classes or Zumba.

Get friendly with the local gym - Talk to your nearest gym about any Movember events they might be hosting or try to work out a deal in which you and your friends or co-workers can use the gym as part of a 30 day trial.

Get the whole office involved – Why not make it a group effort within your workplace and get everyone on board! For 30 days, make a point of getting everyone in the office up and moving every hour. The key is to raise everyone’s heart rate, even if it’s just for a few minutes five times a day.

Become an industry champ

Joining one of the Movement Industry Challenges will see you competing with other Mo’s and MOVErs who work within your industry, right across Australia. The aim is to bring companies together with a little friendly competition, while raising funds for men’s health. With prizes and awards going to top fundraisers and the best Mo growers, it’s your chance to get a team together and claim bragging rights for a year.CBHS_1e

Why take part?

The Movember Foundation’s mission is to make a global contribution to men living happier, healthier, longer lives. It’s the driving force behind everything the organisation does and why millions of people take part in Movember every year.

The state of men’s health is in a crisis. Simply put, men are dying too young – on average, six years earlier than women. The main issues that Movember draws attention to are prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.

The impact of prostate and testicular cancer on lives is substantial, with prostate cancer being the second most common cancer in men worldwide. Men are also at the highest risk of mental health issues, with three quarters of suicides being committed by men. The World Health Organisation estimates that 510,000 men die from suicide globally each year. That’s one every minute.

By getting involved, you’re not only raising funds to support breakthrough solutions to these issues, but you’re helping to spread the word that men’s health must be taken seriously.

The vision? Give life to your fathers, sons and every man out there, and provide a brighter future for men’s health.
