6 apps to help you stay organised in 2016

11 January, 2016
Apps Thumb

In 2013, as part of the five year anniversary of the Apple App Store, eBay asked 200 iPhone users to try to make it four days without using any apps. Over one third of participants couldn’t make it through the four-day challenge, and that was 2013! Imagine how many participants would cut the challenge short today?

Let’s face it, apps have changed the way in which we live our lives. When they’re taken away we can feel powerless and unprotected and it’s quickly evident how much they can help to simplify everyday activities. The very definition of an “app” is a self-contained program or piece of software designed to fulfil a particular purpose and help you perform specific tasks in an easy manner. Apps exist to increase the functionality of your device, and the right organisational apps make the perfect personal task management system. But with so many apps out there, how do you know you are choosing the right ones?

With 2016 upon us, we’re sure you’re already thinking about plans for 2016. You might even still be thinking about resolutions for the year ahead. The start of a new year is a great time to do some research into what you can do to make your life easier – especially if your resolve is to be more organised this year!

So with that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most recommended downloads.

Best apps for organising your life

Sleep Cycle

Free in iTunes
$1.49 in Google Play

Waking up is your first daily challenge, and waking doesn’t get more gentle than with Sleep Cycle. Waking up to the feeling of being refreshed and relaxed is all about timing. Get it right, and it’s the best way to start your day.

Sleep Cycle uses sound analysis to identify sleep states by tracking your movements and using your desired alarm time as a base, it wakes you at the appropriate time. By monitoring signals from your body, Sleep Cycle will wake you during your lightest sleep and this soft awakening results in the feeling of being naturally woken. No more snooze button needed!

Evernote

Free in iTunes
Free in Google Play Apps 1

Evernote is the modern workspace that syncs between all of your devices. It’s available for just about every platform, be it a smartphone, smartwatch, tablet or desktop, and it can be used as a scanner, powerful tagging system or backup device. Write notes, make checklists, store your research, organise your web articles, files and photos, or start a discussion with your colleagues. It’s all available within this app.

Evernote essentially brings all your life’s work into one space and while it’s free for those requiring basic organisation, there are three other plans for those wanting more advanced features.

Pocketbook

Free in iTunes
Free in Google Play

Expense tracker Pocketbook automatically organises your spending into categories like clothes, groceries and fuel, giving you a clear idea of how your money is being spent. You can set up budgets, check your balances, view your transactions and be sure never to be late on a bill again with the app’s automatic bill detection.

Built to save you time and money, Pocketbook means the end of spreadsheets, sitting at the computer for hours, and helps you get on top of your money in real time. The forecasting feature is particularly handy, as it allows you to budget for the coming weeks and months.

Upto

Free in iTunes

Life goes beyond meetings and appointments and your calendar should too. Upto gives you a more complete view of everything that’s coming up in your life, and declutters the information so that it’s clear and quick to view. Featuring two layers, the front layer is your existing calendar, while the back layer is based on your likes and interests. It’s professional in the front, party in the back.

Upto works with Google Calendar, iCloud, Outlook, Facebook Events and any other calendar that syncs with your phone. Add a new event and it automatically syncs. Add a meeting with the boss and it’s there to remind you. Add a new TV program you like, and you’ll be able to plan your week around it. Upto manages everything that’s important and meaningful to you.

Any.do

Free in iTunes
Free in Google Play

Any.do is used by more than 11 million people worldwide, keeping lists, tasks and work projects in perfect sync across all of your devices (even when you’re offline). It lets you manage your personal goals, family duties, team projects and productivity in one place, and displays everything you need to organise the week ahead. Simply designed, Any.do offers powerful features including a daily planner and list organiser, making both small and big tasks simplified and easy. Planning a holiday? Any.do can help. Training new team members? Any.do can help with that too.

Pepperplate

Free in iTunes
Free in Google Play Apps 3

Keeping your family fed can seem like a pretty basic task, but it actually takes a whole lot of organisation. Pepperplate is an app for serious cooks who love to be in the kitchen, and offers all the tools you need to cook a midweek family meal, a solo supper or a dinner party for twelve. You can manage your recipes, shopping lists, and menus, share recipes with friends and family, and manage your cooking times. You can organise your shopping to automatically match the way you shop in store, import recipes from your favourite sites and create your own unlimited categories for an organised recipe collection.
