Top 5 nutritional apps 2014

09 December, 2014
health and fitness, monitor sleep

These days there seems to be an app for everything that you could need, from ordering a pizza delivery to doing your online banking. One industry that apps have particularly thrived in is the health and fitness industry, with a range of programs designed to monitor your exercise, track your food intake and even monitor how well you sleep at night.

At the beginning of this year we reviewed the top 5 health apps of 2013, and so this year we’ve decided to take a different approach and only choose the top 5 nutritional apps of 2014. As there are hundreds available, there was a long list that had to be narrowed down.

Here’s what we discovered:

Nutritionist+ is an app designed to help people both lose weight and also to gain muscle tone. CBHS member Angus, who has been part of the CBHS family for over 13 years, first recommended this app to us after his success with the program. And since downloading the Nutritionist+ app in January 2013, he has done nothing but rave about his results.

Rather than losing weight, Angus was more interested in gaining lean muscle mass. To do this, he initially went straight for the ‘muscle gain’ setting, but discovered that this did not result in the toned look he was going for. He decided to try the setting ‘lose fat’, and reduced his body fat levels from 22% to 10% in 12 weeks. Angus then switched the settings back to ‘muscle gain’, and hasn’t looked back since.

When we interviewed Angus to find out more about this app, one of the questions that we asked was what his favourite aspect of the app is. His response was simple: “It’s not just a calorie counter”. A lot of science and research has been used as the foundation of the app’s principles and recommendations, and the information provided is comprehensive and tailored to suit your needs.

You can download the Nutritionist+ app on Android here, or on iOS here. You can also find out more information about the app through their Facebook page.

Fooducate app, healthy alternative

The Fooducate app was designed to help people shop and eat healthily in their daily life. It is designed so that when you scan the barcode of a grocery product in the shopping centre, the item’s nutritional information in plain language will be displayed. The app will also give the food a letter grade from A to D, and will make suggestions for a similar yet healthier alternative.

As well as this, you can use the app as a way to monitor your daily food intake, as a calorie counter, and also as an exercise tracker, providing a comprehensive healthy approach to your lifestyle.

You can download the Fooducate app on Android or on iOS.

HealthyOut Healthy Meal Finder

HealthyOut Healthy Meal Finder is an app designed to help you eat healthily even when you’re eating out. It is often when someone is trying to eat healthily that they restrict the amount of socialising and dining out they do in fear they will blow all of their good work on a single meal. This is exacerbated by the variations in ingredients that are used from restaurant to restaurant even for a dish that you would expect to be exactly the same.

This is no longer a worry thanks to HealthyOut. It doesn’t matter what type of restaurant you are at, as the app allows you to search by cuisine, ingredients, and even by dish. There is even nutritional information on each meal provided where available.

The HealthyOut Healthy Meal Finder app can be downloaded on iOS here.

Don’t be fooled by the name. The MyFitnessPal is an app that has many facets, and the nutritional side of it is set under ‘The Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal’. With a 5 star rating on iPhone from 3,391 ratings and a 4.7 star rating on Android from 697,756 ratings, this app is everything you need to stay healthy.

With a continually growing database of over 3 million foods, this app provides its users with information on every aspect of food, from the fat and fibre content to how much cholesterol it contains. Additionally, the app also features a barcode scanner, allowing you to scan in foods while shopping to check the information not provided in the nutritional table.

You can download the MyFitnessPal app on Android here, and on iOS here.

Shopwell, private nutritionist

One of the hardest things about healthy eating is going grocery shopping, because you are then surrounded by all of these yummy treats that aren’t at all good for you. And that’s where the Shopwell app comes in.

For those of us who can’t have a private nutritionist create our food shopping lists, the next best thing is to have Shopwell do it for us. By inputting your gender, age, diet needs, health goals, ingredient and nutrition preferences, this app will score each product that you scan in. You can use the barcode of the product to scan the item in, and the scoring ranges from 0-100 (the higher the number, the better the product is for you).

You can download the Shopwell app on Android here, and on iOS here
