Hospital in the Home

Having home-based treatment and care minimises hospital time. In some cases, you might be able to avoid a hospital admission altogether.

CBHS provides Hospital in the Home as part of our promise to deliver outstanding value and a comprehensive range of insurance products for CBHS members and their families. This service gives members the opportunity to receive medical treatment and support at home, subject to approval from their doctor.

Benefits of Hospital in the Home

Having home-based treatment and care minimises hospital time. In some cases, you might be able to avoid a hospital admission altogether.

Benefits include:

  • Treatment from specialised medical professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists or nurses in the comfort and privacy of your own home.
  • Shortened hospital stay or hospital admission completely avoided.
  • Reduced exposure to hospital-related infections and complications.
  • If eligible, (assessed on an individual basis); you may qualify for related home-based-care services such as domestic help or meals.

Am I eligible for home-based treatment?

Home-based hospital or care services are available to all CBHS members who have a hospital or package product, subject to approval from their doctor. The relevant waiting period is 12 months.

Cost of home-based treatment

There is no additional cost if the services are appropriate substitutes for treatment that would be covered in a hospital under that product. An example is if you have surgery in hospital and your doctor recommends rehabilitation and physiotherapy. If your doctor approves home-based treatment as being clinically appropriate, you may be able to receive the rehabilitation treatment and care at home.

Additional items such as artificial aids can be claimed under CBHS’s Extras products. Wound management could also be undertaken at home, whereby a registered nurse would come to your home to clean and change wound dressings.

How to access home-based treatment

Talk to your surgeon, doctor or hospital about the possibility of receiving rehabilitation treatment or the care of a registered nurse at home. If your doctor thinks home-based treatment or rehabilitation is clinically appropriate, we will work to coordinate a suitable treatment plan for you. You can also contact us directly to find out more about how this care is coordinated.
