CBHS is helping CommBank fight cancer with Tour de Cure

17.10.2024
c4c-syd-17

Since 2017, CBHS has been a major sponsor of Can4Cancer (C4C), CommBank’s largest charity event for Tour de Cure. Over the last 10 years, C4C has raised over $16 million through a series of walking, running, and cycling events.

As we gear up to head to the starting line again this year, CBHS is excited to support as the Diamond sponsor and Wellbeing partner, helping CommBank achieve their $20 million goal.

But it's not about us. It's about the CommBank community and CBHS legends who signed up to do the hard yards for a great cause. And we're here to support them every step of the way, preparing for the challenge ahead and beyond.

What is Can4Cancer all about?

Can4Cancer is the CommBank Staff Foundation’s community initiative with Tour de Cure, a charity dedicated to funding research to find a cure for cancer. C4C includes a 10 or 21km walk in six cities around Australia, three-day cycle in NSW and Victoria, and a 50km team or individual run. And, for the first time this year, C4C is going aquatic, with a 4km swim event to be held in Sydney.

Can4Cancer, in partnership with Tour de Cure, is the CommBank Staff Foundation’s largest employee fundraising program with a purpose of ‘Changing Lives, Ending Cancer’.

With almost one in two people affected by cancer in their lifetime, Tour de Cure (TDC), have funded 156 major cancer breakthroughs and raised $130 million for cancer research.

What does CBHS bring to the game?

CBHS, the health cover for the CommfBank family, is proud to be providing support for the eighth year running. Gathering our orange army of event participants and volunteers to help end cancer is what we’re all about!

Let’s take a quick look at our history with Can4Cancer:

  • 2017: during our first year supporting C4C, CBHS sponsored walk and ride events in three cities. At that time, there were just 1,100 participants.
  • 2018: CBHS helped Can4Cancer raise more than $2million across a series of capital city walks and a ride (NSW).
  • 2019: CBHS sponsored five walks around Australia, helping raise another $2.6 million, with over 2,500 walkers taking part in Sydney, and hundreds taking part in walks throughout Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, Melbourne and Perth.
  • 2020: Of course, COVID saw physical events postponed, but CBHS was the exclusive partner for a digital program called myCan4Cancer in October 2020.
  • 2021: CBHS sponsored all aspects of Can4Cancer: Walk events nationally in five cities, the ride and inaugural run in NSW, and the myCan4Cancer digital program.
  • 2022: In addition to continuing our sponsorship of C4C, we offered a variety of support to the CommBank community at this year’s events. From handing out sunscreen and leading warm-up sessions at the start of each event, to providing post-event massages for sore muscles, we were there every step of the way.
  • 2023: The events collectively broke records, with 6,000+ participants across Australia and 3,500+ in Sydney alone. CBHS sponsored all walks, provided giveaways and massages, and created a training program called Fit Steps to help people get prepared.

In 2024 Can4Cancer celebrates 10 years of supporting Tour de Cure.

This year, you’ll see CBHS getting involved or lending support at:

  • The national program of 21km and 10km walks throughout Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Hobart.
  • The flagship C4C 370km cycle in NSW
  • The inaugural 4km swim event in Sydney

It’s all happening throughout September and October!

Why do we choose to be part of this journey?

As the private health fund for the CommBank family, CBHS and CommBank share the same cancer-smart values. We hope to help bring awareness to cancer prevention and help raise much-needed funds for cancer cure research. We're also excited to encourage physical wellbeing among CommBank and CBHS staff, and are proud of the impressive number of CBHS staff who are walking, volunteering and fundraising for the event. Over 100 nationally this year!

We provide all walkers and riders with expert health and wellbeing information to help right from the start of their journey to the finish line safely and comfortably. That includes a training plan, nutrition and hydration guidance, tips for happy feet, ways to keep a positive mindset, as well as podcast and playlist recommendations to help get through those training walks and the big day itself.

Check out why some of the CBHS volunteers and walkers decided to embark on this adventure. We asked our people, ‘Why are you taking part in Can4Cancer 2024?’ here’s a small sample of what they told us:

C4C 2024 - Chris Bui

C4C 2024 - Chris Bui

C4C 2024 - Srijith Varghese

C4C 2024 - Rechelle Prasad

A humbling reminder of the need for more cancer research.
