How much can I expect to gain over the holiday season?

Studies are conflicted depending on culture, but it can be 2 to 6kg.

Where do the extra calories come from?

From amount and type – holiday foods are normally sugar and carb heavy, and people tend to drink a lot more.

When does holiday weight gain begin and end?

At the extreme ends, late November to mid-January.

Does the weight stick?

For some the weight is lost when they get back to their regular diets. Others (a lot of others) keep the weight. The accumulation of this weight over time can lead to being overweight or obese.

Can I avoid holiday weight gain?

Yes. Eating sensibly and in moderation may save you from some weight gain.

How do I lose my holiday weight gain?

Diet and exercise – eat more healthy things and less unhealthy things, and burn some more calories with walking, running, lifting or sports. Check out our article on losing weight for more advice.

Anything else I should know?

Remember what the season is for – focus on the family and the friends, and let the food and drink be the accompaniment.
