Zero-waste kitchen: Simple ways to save more
Did you know Australians waste around 7.6 million tonnes of food every year? And surprisingly, about a third of that comes from our own kitchens — not restaurants or supermarkets.
The good news? That means we have the power to change it.
If you’ve ever bought food with the best intentions only to throw it out a week later, you’re not alone. The goal of this blog is simple: to help you cut down on food waste, save money, and feel good about the food you buy, one small step at a time.
Why do we waste so much food?
There are plenty of reasons food ends up in the bin — shopping without a plan, forgetting what’s in the fridge, or ordering takeaway instead of cooking what’s on hand.
But most waste happens when our plans don’t match our reality. Maybe life gets busy, or we overestimate how often we’ll cook that week. Whatever the reason, being a little more mindful can make a big difference.

Start with smart meal planning
If you had to cook dinner tonight without going to the shops, what would you make?
That’s the mindset of a zero-waste cook — use what you have first.
Meal planning doesn’t have to be rigid or complicated. Try these simple steps:
- Check your fridge and pantry before you shop
- Choose versatile ingredients that work across different meals
- Leave one night for a “use-it-up” or “fridge-clean-out” dinner
- Have a few fallback meals you can whip up with staples on hand
- Try apps like Saveful to enter what’s in your kitchen and get recipe ideas.
As an added bonus, planning your meals ahead of time can make a big difference to your health and wellbeing. It helps you enjoy a wider variety of nutritious foods, keep your portions balanced, and stay on track with your health goals. Plus, it can take the stress out of mealtimes and help you make healthier choices when life gets busy.
Storage is your secret weapon
Good food storage can double the life of your groceries — and keep your fridge organised.
Use clear containers or glass jars so you can see what’s inside. Add a simple label with the date — it’s amazing how much longer food lasts when you know what needs to be eaten first.
A few storage tricks from our CBHS Health Hub team:
- Wrap banana stems in foil to slow ripening
- Store celery and carrots in water to keep them crisp
- Keep strawberries in glass jars — they’ll stay fresh longer
- Dice and freeze herbs or leftover veggies for future meals.

Don’t forget your freezer
Your freezer isn’t just for leftovers — it’s a powerful tool for saving food and money.
You can safely freeze more than you might think:
- Milk and butter
- Garlic and ginger
- Cheese
- Bread
- Rice, pasta, or mashed potato
- Fresh herbs
- Fruit
- Meat bones.
Just remember, label everything clearly and rotate older items to the front so nothing gets forgotten.
FIFO: first in, first out
This simple rule helps you stay in control of what’s in your kitchen.
When you unpack new groceries, move the older items to the front so they’re used first. It’s a small habit that makes a big difference over time.

Get creative with leftovers
Zero-waste cooking is about making the most of what you already have.
Try these ideas:
- Veggie scraps → homemade broth
- Stale bread → croutons or breadcrumbs
- Overripe fruit → muffins or smoothies
- Cucumber → pickles
- Assorted veggies → stir-fry, omelette, or soup.
With a little creativity, there’s almost always a second life for tired ingredients.
Six small steps to a zero-waste kitchen
- Plan before you shop
- Store food properly
- Prep now, enjoy later
- Label and date your food
- Follow FIFO
- Use every part.
Remember, small changes add up. And if nothing else, you can feel proud next time your fridge celery is perfectly chopped, labelled, and ready to use.
