What is depression?

Depression is an intense feeling of sadness, low mood or numbness that may continue for weeks, months or even years, sometimes without any obvious cause. Depression can affect both your physical and mental health, depleting energy and motivation, affecting your relationships and preventing you from enjoying the things you used to enjoy doing.

Depression is common, and it can be successfully treated.

Depression programs and support

Care at home

CBHS Better Living programs can help you manage your mental health at home with individualised health coaching over a period of four to six months. This involves up to 15 video and/or phone consultations with psychologists and/or mental health nurses. These sessions support behavioural and lifestyle changes that can help improve your mental health and wellbeing. Better Living programs are designed to complement, not replace, existing clinical treatment or therapy. Read more about our Better Living programs.

Hospital care at home

You can get hospital grade care in the comfort of your own home with our Hospital Substitute Treatment programs (HST). Acute mental health conditions can be complex and sometimes require hospitalisation, but you may be able to avoid that through our HST program. As well as mental health support from specialist nurses, you may be able to get help with personal care and home support so you can concentrate on getting well.

Read more about our Hospital Substitute Treatment program.

Talk to a professional

Psychology is covered under CBHS Extras. Psychologists can assess, diagnose and treat mental health, behavioural and emotional disorders, including depression. The amount of benefits you can claim will depend on your level of cover. Check your policy for details or view CBHS Extras cover.

Mental Health Navigator

Members with CBHS Prestige cover can also access our Mental Health Navigator, which offers confidential support from the comfort of your own home. After a virtual meeting with a mental health nurse you’re referred to a psychiatrist and/or clinical psychologist for a detailed assessment via video link. The nurse then guides you to follow-up treatment and supports you for six months. Read more about Mental Health Navigator.

If you or someone you know, needs urgent help, go straight to your GP or hospital emergency department, or contact a 24/7 crisis centre
