Sleep and fatigue

Sleep is essential for health and wellbeing. One in three adults don’t get enough, which can increase the risk of fatigue and chronic health problems.

About sleep and fatigue

When we sleep our brains and bodies consolidate information, grow muscle, repair tissue and synthesise hormones. They’re busy even if we don’t know it! Getting a good night’s sleep is key to better focus and creativity, improved concentration, less stress, increased immunity and a longer lifespan. Prolonged lack of sleep can lead to a feeling of lethargy and lack of energy – in other words, fatigue.

4 out of 10 Australians don’t get enough sleep.

Inadequate sleep contributed to 3,017 deaths in 2016-17.

25% of working Australians may miss one day of work a month due to poor sleep.

20% of fatal road accidents involve driver fatigue.
