Over 290,000 women give birth in Australia each year. Every birth and baby will be as unique as every mother. To help you on this milestone journey, we’ve put together a series of helpful articles on a range of pregnancy and birth topics including, mind and body health, baby massage, breastfeeding and much more. You can also find out what your CBHS membership will cover before, during and after your pregnancy.
Good health is vital for mother and baby
Whether you’re a mother-to-be, or you’ve already had a baby, you know that your physical and emotional health can affect your baby’s wellbeing – both during your pregnancy and after you’ve given birth. In fact, the health of your baby when they’re born can impact their life as they grow and develop.
You can give your baby a great start and the best chance at thriving by choosing a healthy lifestyle both during your pregnancy and beyond. Good choices can include a balanced diet and exercise as well as attending your antenatal appointments – The Australian Pregnancy Guidelines (2020) recommends first-time mothers have at least 10 antenatal visits for uncomplicated pregnancies and at least seven for subsequent uncomplicated pregnancies.

After having my son, I struggled breastfeeding. I contacted CBHS to discuss services available to support me. I was guided into finding a lactation specialist who could help me navigate the early stages of motherhood and was advised on other benefits I could be entitled to such as breast pump under my Extras cover.
It helped me get the support I needed during a very emotional journey and save money on the services and equipment I needed. So grateful for the guidance!
Two years ago, I suffered a miscarriage at 10 weeks and went into hospital. $100 co-payment and that was it. Three months later, I was pregnant again. This time rushed to hospital by ambulance at six weeks with an ectopic emergency. This resulted in surgery which perforated my stomach. I had to stay in hospital five days. CBHS cover meant I just paid the $100 co-payment per day again and such peace of mind at a horrible time.
We are now four rounds of IVF down and CBHS has been holding my hand the whole way like an old friend. You can’t get better cover for cheaper and the service is phenomenal.
